Family Service Association has been an integral part of the community since 1898 serving low-income and homeless families. Our mission is more important than ever, "Alleviate poverty, encourage self-sufficiency, and promote the dignity of all people".

The tradition remains strong today with programs that provide emergency support, case management, education and referrals that focus on helping families become more self-sufficient and prevent homelessness. Our Housing Advocacy program helps clients striving for self-sufficiency, with rental and utility assistance, as they work towards housing stability. It is our case management-based approach and personal contact that make us different.

Recently, the father of a family of four was laid off after several years of employment and was unable to pay rent and utilities. While he was working hard to find employment, the family was at high risk of eviction and several months behind on utility payments when they came in for help. Family Service was able to provide rental and emergency food assistance. A case manager also worked with another agency on the family's behalf to pay past utility charges. Both parents have now found jobs and are on the wish list for a Habitat for Humanity home.

Imagine. . .a forty-nine year old mother of three becomes homeless after leaving her abusive husband. She moves in with her parents so she can continue her full-time nursing education. A Good Sam Loan is provided to register her car for transportation and make her eligible for Temporary Assistance from the county. Now she will graduate in a few months and Family Service is working with her to secure permanent housing and provide ongoing support services.
